Time is one thing, response is another

God shows up on his own timetable often to our chagrin. We see this in both awesome and not so awesome ways. We are delighted by God's timing in a new friendship, a provision of some kind or just peace amidst a storm. We are also quick to solicit God when hell breaks loose in our lives. Why now, God? What is this cancer all about? Where are you?

And as much as I try to make it otherwise, God does not operate on my time.

God does and often show up at a when we are not expecting. And while I believe that the verses below speak to the coming of the King. I think they also remind us that we need to be watching and waiting. Ready for the baby to be born. Ready—and even expectant—to see God show up in our midst.

We can't possibly understand God's timing in our lives, but are we prepared to move and respond when he arrives or reveals or blesses or takes away?

Here is the reading for the twelfth day of Advent:

Matthew 25:13

“So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive."

Mark 13:33-37

“But the exact day and hour? No one knows that, not even heaven’s angels, not even the Son. Only the Father. So keep a sharp lookout, for you don’t know the timetable. It’s like a man who takes a trip, leaving home and putting his servants in charge, each assigned a task, and commanding the gatekeeper to stand watch. So, stay at your post, watching. You have no idea when the homeowner is returning, whether evening, midnight, cockcrow, or morning. You don’t want him showing up unannounced, with you asleep on the job. I say it to you, and I’m saying it to all: Stay at your post. Keep watch.”

Rev 22:20

"He who testifies to all these things says it again: “I’m on my way! I’ll be there soon! ”Yes! Come, Master Jesus!"
